What is the difference between an Apostille & Authentication?
Apostille certificates are a result of the Hague Convention that allows documents issued in one country to be accepted as official documents in another country. The authentication of public officials' signatures on documents are made in order to be used outside South Africa.
What is the difference between a Police Clearance & a Criminal Background Check?
Criminal Record Checks may be done through an Automated Fingerprint Identification Service (AFIS) which is the database that is searched/ scrutinised during the AFIS criminal check. We take the fingerprint via a Biometric Scanner & the results are available after 48 hours. This report can be used for local Pre-Employment & SACE application etc.
To acquire a Police Clearance Certificate, the South African Police have a form known as the SAPS91A which must be completed and fingerprints may be taken at the local police station or South African Embassy (if abroad). The PCC application goes to the Criminal Records Centre in Pretoria. This process takes longer. The Police Clearance Certificate can be for Immigration purposes & it is valid for SIX months.
A Criminal Record check is not a “Police Clearance Certificate” and is NOT accepted by embassies/consulates for immigration purposes or working abroad.
